  • Air Conditioning Guide: The Condenser Unit

During a Los Angeles heat wave, you can count on getting a lot of use out of your air conditioning system. So when you walk outdoors this month, you may often be greeted by the hum of the large condenser unit. But if you don’t know much about air conditioning systems, you may not know about the components nestled inside, how they work, and, most importantly, how to keep them maintained. To give you a better understanding of the importance of this unit, we’ve put together a guide to some of the key components.

The compressor is one of the most important parts of your air conditioner, adding pressure to refrigerant so that it can pump through the indoor and outdoor units. The compressor needs certain environmental conditions in order to work properly, including the proper amount of refrigerant. When refrigerant is too low, the compressor may struggle to run, and it might overheat. Be sure to call for repairs if you hear any strange noises or notice reduced cooling, as it may indicate a problem with this costly part.

    Condenser Coil

Another important component in the condenser unit is the outside coil. This allows refrigerant to give off heat as it condenses from a gas to a liquid. If this phase conversion cannot take place because the condenser coil is dirty or blocked, you may feel warm air from the vents in your home. That’s why it’s important to schedule regular maintenance to get this coil cleaned and inspected once or twice a year.

The fan is responsible for assisting in the condensation process. Condensation occurs when warm outdoor air blows over the coil, and the fan then helps heat from the refrigerant to dissipate in the air. This process may be in trouble if a fan blade is damaged or if the fan motor is faulty.

Be sure to talk to an air conditioning expert at the first sign of problems, and schedule maintenance regularly to discover repair needs before they become a major problem. To learn more about air conditioning services in Los Angeles, call AZ Air Conditioning and Heating today!
