  • How Duct Leaks Affect Your Comfort (and Bank Account)

If you currently own and operate a whole-house air conditioning system, like so many of us here in Torrance, then you know all about ducts. They’re made out of sheet-metal or flexible tubing, and they are responsible for bringing your indoor air to the AC unit and for distributing the cooled air back throughout your living space. Sounds important, right? Well, if your air ducts are leaking at any point in the system, it can seriously disrupt your comfort, lead to significantly higher energy bills, and also cause your system to work harder than it needs to.

    Why Your Ducts Are Leaking

Don’t take it personally. In fact, the vast majority of air ducts in this country are not as tightly sealed as their owners might suppose. Anywhere from 20-30% of your air can be lost due to small holes, loose connections, and other damage. If they are very old, they have endured years of wear and tear, or they may have even suffered physical damage if you’ve renovated recently.

What You Can Do about It

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can feel free to have a look at your ducts to see if you see any physical damage or holes, but chances are that it may be small enough to easily overlook. The first step to resolving the issue is with a duct test, which will assess how well your allegedly air-tight system holds air.

    Professional Duct Sealing Is Best

After you’ve worked with a professional to assess the condition of your air ducts, you can then take the next step of having your ducts sealed. This is not a job for duct tape, but for professional grade mastic, which is a resin applied to cracks and holes that is a lasting solution.

Rely on AZ Air Conditioning and Heating to fix your ducts and restore the efficiency and effectiveness of your AC system before summer begins in earnest.
