Why Install a Heat Pump?

Tuesday, December 27th, 2016

Winter has arrived in Burbank, CA, and if you’re looking at replacing your HVAC system, now is actually a very good time. Our cold weather never gets that cold in sunny Southern California, and replacing an old air conditioner – or even a heater – is rarely an emergency.  That gives you the time to make a duly-considered solution, which might include an alternative to the more traditional models of heating and air conditioning. Heat pumps, in particular, do quite well in climates like ours, and if you need a new system, this might be an ideal solution to your HVAC problems.

Why Is Ice on My Heat Pump?

Monday, February 15th, 2016

Our winters can sometimes be cool here in Los Angeles, CA but almost never cold enough to freeze. That’s why it can be such a surprise when you step outside and find the outdoor surface of your heat pump with ice on it. It seems almost counterintuitive – ice on a machine that should be producing warmth this time of year – and in point of fact, ice forming on a heat pump can be a big problem if you don’t address it promptly. It interferes with moving parts as well as forcing the system to work harder to heat or cool your home. If it isn’t addressed, it will result a more serious breakdown, resulting in a larger repair bill. A trained technician can fix the issue, and you can help him out by keeping the outdoor components clear of debris and dry – especially when temperatures get particularly chilly. Beyond that, there are usually one of two reasons why ice is on your heat pump.

How a Heat Pump can Improve Your Home Heating

Monday, March 30th, 2015

When most people think of a home heating system, they imagine either a furnace or a boiler. This is because those two systems are by far the most popular home heating systems in the country. That’s all well and good, but those two systems aren’t the only options when it comes to heating your home. Heat pumps are a great alternative to more traditional system, and offer a number of distinct advantages.

Let’s take a closer look at heat pumps, how they work, and how they can improve your home heating.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a system that doesn’t burn fuel to create heat. Instead, it evaporates and condenses refrigerant to absorb heat from the outside air and bring it inside. Think of it as operating a bit like an air conditioner, but in reverse. Far from just being a backwards air conditioner, however, a heat pump is also equipped with a reversing valve. This reversing valve allows the system to reverse the flow of refrigerant through the system. By doing this, a heat pump can switch back and forth between heating and cooling modes.

What are the Advantages of a Heat Pump?

For one thing, by installing a heat pump you save hundreds of dollars and a lot of space that would otherwise be dedicated to a separate air conditioning system. The savings don’t end there, however. The vast majority of your heating system’s operating cost is paying for the fuel that it burns. With a heat pump, all you need to pay for is the electricity it uses to operate. After a couple of years, a heat pump will completely pay itself off in savings and start putting money directly into your pocket. Heat pumps also happen to be quite environmentally friendly, as they don’t burn fossil fuels like other heating systems do. If you decide to install a heat pump in your home, you’ll be garnering a lot of advantages that other systems won’t be able to match.
