Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a hot summer day in Los Angeles, nothing could be worse than recognizing your HVAC isn’t operating the way it was built to. The last thing you want to do is call for cooling system service. But your AC is a quite complex system, so it can be difficult to discern what’s triggering the issue without training.

That’s why AZ Air Conditioning and Heating created this guide to help you understand what might be taking place with your cooling system. Here, you’ll uncover a couple usual explanations for why your home is feeling uncomfortable. And though a few of these are straightforward DIY tasks, you may have to turn to a professional for AC repair.

And if need help, AZ Air Conditioning and Heating is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Los Angeles.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Incorrect

Every home sets their thermostat a touch differently to work with their individual preferences. However, a lot of people make the error of setting their device to “On” instead of “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to push out air even once you’ve gotten to your set temperature.

This can seem like your AC is blowing out untreated air, when in fact it’s just employing the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Trying changing this setting and determine if things cool off.

2. Your System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two primary areas to examine for dirt or dust accrual when your cooling system doesn’t feel like it is working right.

First off, take a look at your AC system’s filter. If you don’t switch out your filter routinely, buildup can make it hard for air to move through and cool down your space. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a substitute. (And in general, you need to switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter appears good, head to your outside unit. Double check there’s a reasonable amount of space around your air conditioner and clear any plants or dirt close by. This element of your cooling system discharges the heat from inside your home. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be cool in your home.

We suggest setting professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your equipment working smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that cools down the air in your house. It cycles between your indoor and outside system elements to absorb and release heat, to help your space keep the right temperature. If there is an opening somewhere, you won’t be comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a lack of chilled air, larger energy bills, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises coming from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant may be leaking, call AZ Air Conditioning and Heating for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Should Be Replaced

Your system includes a couple essential elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is not working, your home comfort declines.

Our AZ Air Conditioning and Heating pros are trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you locate and mend any trouble.

5. Your System Needs to Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is upward of 10 years old, it might be time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system gets older, it simply won’t run as well as it once did. And it could be making your space too warm.

If your system is on the younger side but still isn’t cutting it, it might be the wrong size for your home. Air conditioners are not one-size-fits-all. A system that’s not big enough just can’t help a house the way a correctly sized system can.
